SERDANG – The Office of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) will showcase a total of 570 exhibits from the field of agriculture, food, forestry and environment, health, science, technology, engineering and social science at the Invention, Research and Innovation Exhibition (PRPI 2011) to be held from 19th to 21st of July, 2011.
The largest of UPM's research exhibitions, the PRPI 2011is to be held at the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Cultural and Arts Centre, UPM and will display new innovations and inventions by UPM’s researchers that are ready to be commercialized to the industry and which will benefit the society at large.
Entering its ninth year, this year’s PRPI which conveys the theme; Commercialising Innovations Towards A Sustainable Economy and Community Well-Being, will also see an invention competition between secondary schools from across the country (Mini PRPI) in addition to an exhibition on robotics, agriculture and livestock; UPM orchids, herbs and health foods, cancer and health, green technologies, education and social sciences as well as the UPM Creative and Innovative Circle.
The exhibition will also feature a special section which will highlight UPM’s research, development and commercialization (R, D & C) of agricultural products, vaccine and Nutraceutical products, cancer and health-related products and green technology. All the products exhibited in this section are those that have not only won national and international awards, but have also been either successfully commercialized or are in their pre-commercialisation stages.
PRPI 2011 will also have a demonstration of new food production by the Faculty of Food Science and Technology, and an interactive demonstration from the National Science Centre.
Also forming part of the exhibition’s programme is the campus tour, where visitors, school students, members of the industry and media will be taken on a tram ride to UPM Equine Centre to experience firsthand handling of horses; to Putra Dairy Park to witness the hi-tech cow milking and to view UPM’s deer, cow and goat farming technologies; to Institute of Bioscience’s Conservatory Park to view the different types of herbs grown there;, the animal clinic where veterinarians will share a tip or two on animal care; and to the orchid farm.
The exhibition will also feature the launching of a book entitled ‘Contemporary Environmental Quality Management in Malaysia and Selected Countries’, a product of the Faculty of Environmental Studies, the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with United Malacca Berhad in relation to the management of palm oil farming involving a fund of RM2 million, and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between UPM’s Institute of Advanced Technology and Malaysian Green Technology Corporation.
Apart from all that, PRPI will also feature the launch of Monogastric Animal Feed, a poultry growth enhancer without the use of injection, created by the Faculty of Agriculture.
The PRPI2011 will see the participation of UPM’s lecturers, research fellows, post-doctoral students, graduate students; and research officers who will also be entering their respective research projects into the invention competitions held at the exhibition.
The exhibition is seen as a means to strengthen the strategic relationship between UPM and the ministry in line with the government’s efforts to spur high-income economy through the strengthening of research, development and innovation in relevant fields and to convince stakeholders or industry players to contribute towards research funds and commercialization efforts.
